They sound interchangeable.
They are not.
A food can be fermented and have no living microbes left when you eat it.

And a food can contain a specific probiotic strain with evidence behind it.
Those are related ideas, but they are different.

Gut-health marketing has discovered that words like:

- active,
- probiotic,
- microbiome,
- and fermented
can make ordinary foods sound almost medicinal.
Sometimes the claim is meaningful.
Sometimes it is mostly packaging.
So translate claims into questions.
Contains live cultures? Which cultures?
Contains probiotics? Which strain?
Supports gut health? Based on what?
Curiosity is cheaper than buying everything with a cartoon bacterium on the package.
🍽️ Live-Culture Foods Can Still Just Be Food
Yogurt does not have to become microbiome therapy.
Kefir does not have to become a biological intervention.
Kimchi does not have to become a gut-health protocol.
These are foods.
They can taste good, add variety, fit your meals, and happen to contain living microorganisms.
